Staying in hotels all the time can become expensive. That’s why I try to avoid them whenever possible. On my recent trip to New York City, I decided to rent someone else’s apartment for a change.
I had heard that it’s possible to rent an apartment or house on a short term basis, but always assumed that it was a complicated process, expensive, or that there were long minimum stay requirements.
So I was pleasantly surprised when I booked a 2 night stay in a cozy apartment in the middle of Manhattan for only $100 a night through Roomorama.
You normally can’t find a hotel room in New York City anywhere close to that price!
Living Like a Local
Having your own place on the road can be very rewarding. It’s possible to experience the area more like a local does. Saying hi to your new neighbors, doing your own laundry, cooking at home, inviting people over, etc.
My Upper East Side apartment had a small kitchen, bright living room with a big-screen TV, a clean bathroom, and laundry facilities in the basement.
It was simple, clean, and cosy. Exactly what I wanted.
There are plenty of really fancy apartments available through Roomorama too if that’s what you’re looking for. But price and location were much more important to me on this trip.
I wasn’t planning on spending much time in the apartment anyway… this was New York City after all! :D
The location was very convenient, with a cool organic market right down the street. Plus I was only 3 blocks away from the subway station.
Central Park was within walking distance too.
For a few days I might as well have been a real New Yorker!
(calm down New Yorkers, I’m kidding.)
The Roomorama website was easy to navigate, and I could customize my apartment search based on price range, location, or number of bedrooms. You can rent out a whole apartment to yourself, or just rent a single room within a bigger place.
Using the site, I contacted my host and told her I was interested in the apartment. After ensuring that it was available, we confirmed the booking online and exchanged contact details.
When I arrived in New York City I took the subway from the airport and walked a few blocks to her apartment building where she was waiting to let me in. I then provided her with a Roomorama payment code after checking the place out to my satisfaction.
My host was very friendly and gave me great tips on things to do in the area.
New York City Attractions
While I was in Manhattan I found cheap last-minute tickets to “The Book of Mormon” on Broadway, one of the hottest (and funniest) shows in the city.
I also visited the powerful 9/11 World Trade Center Memorial, and took a leisurely stroll around the notorious Wall Street area.
And no journey to New York City would be complete without a little nightlife!
I definitely need to go back again soon and stay longer next time.
There’s a whole lot to do & see in New York City! :D
