2 Year Travel Anniversary

Two years ago in November I quit my job, sold most of my belongings, left my girlfriend, packed a backpack and set out to travel the world.

It was an exciting time, but I was plenty nervous too.

The journey up to this point has been full of highs, lows, insane adventures, eye-opening experiences, great new friends, and a better understanding about the world we live in.

They’ve honestly been the best years of my life.

So to celebrate my 2 Year Travelversary, I’ve decided to share a few of my most memorable stories & photos to reminisce a little. Enjoy!

Ek Balam Ruins Mexico

Mayan Ruins of Ek Balam

My long-term adventure began in Mexico’s Yucatan Penninsula. I was forced to confront my horrible Spanish skills & experience my first taste of culture shock. But it’s also where I fell in love with travel.

Beware Bandits in the Mountains!

Starting with a week in Guatemala City, I then move into the mountains to spend 3 weeks living with a local family while attending some much-needed Spanish classes. Ultimately Guatemala is my home for 2 months.

Drug Trafficking in the Jungle

Honduras taught me that just because a country has a crime problem does not mean you shouldn’t visit it. After only three weeks here I left with many new friends and a few memorable adventures too.

Volcano Boarding Superheros!

I completely fell in love with Nicaragua. From building poop ovens, chasing frogs, sliding down volcanoes, and surfing epic waves, it has something for everyone. It took me over 4 months to finally leave.

Hitchhiking in Costa Rica

Costa Rica

All the backpackers I met told me Costa Rica was touristy & expensive. But if you get away from the hot-spots, this country can be very rewarding. Beautiful rainforest treks and volcano hikes will have you longing for more.

Exploring the Darien Gap

Exploring Panama’s Darien Gap has been one of my favorite experiences to date. So was getting my laptop computer stolen by hookers. This country is just full of surprises!

South Africa

Visiting the southern-most country in Africa was a dream come true. I was unprepared for how mind-numbingly beautiful and diverse it was. Two weeks was only enough time to get a glimpse though — there is a lot more for me to see.

Mexico (again)

Wanting to settle down somewhere for a bit and have a normal routine, I headed back to Mexico and rented an apartment in Playa del Carmen for 3 months. There is always plenty to do (and eat) in the Yucatan.

My Secret Life as a Pirate

New Hampshire

Venturing back to my hometown for a summer, I found an apartment close to family and old friends. Picked up a side job cleaning college apartments and pillaging booty on the high seas to help fund my future travel escapades.

Canyoning Canada

Rappelling down Waterfalls

Despite living in the United States my whole life, I’d only visited Canada a handful of times. But I finally made it up to the province of Quebec to wander around for a few weeks. It was an absolute blast.

On to Mexico yet again. The gulf state of Veracruz and then Chihuahua in the North. Both were absolutely full of outdoor opportunities and unique cultural experiences.

Next up was Utah, the Rocky Mountain playground. After 3 weeks of incredible hiking, a fitness retreat, and some pre-season snowboarding, I was whipped into shape pretty quickly.

What’s the Plan for Year 3?

This long-term backpacking journey of mine has been one hell of a ride, but I don’t plan to stop anytime soon. It’s a big world out there — and I’ll be visiting many more countries, meeting tons of fun people, and chasing new travel experiences as much as humanly possible.

Why? Because this is what I love to do.
