Daily Travel Photo: Choosing a Rooster Death Implement

Telica Nicaragua Rooster Spur

Choosing Metal Spurs Before a Match

The implements in the boxes are called gaffs, sharpened metal spurs that are attached to the legs of roosters during a cockfight. The bird owners and officials carefully choose and measure the spikes before a match. It sounds evil, but they are actually just replacing the rooster’s natural spur that gets partially removed.

“they are actually just replacing the rooster’s natural spur ” ‘replacing it with a sharpened metal dagger’ is more accurate perhaps?

This is correct, but I see it as more humane! :) The roosters can kill each other quicker this way.

That did cross my mind, Matt, but I think on balance that a stab through the heart with a sharp instrument is still tough.

The whole scene of rooster fighting is so barbaric-that’s just plain dreadful.
