This is the cargo ferry that took me from Isla Ometepe across Lake Nicaragua to the border town of San Carlos, Nicaragua. The trip took 10 hours, and we stopped at islands along the way to drop off people and produce. I was forced to sleep on the deck of the boat because all of the benches were being used, and there were no more places to hang a hammock.
At one point, I awakened to the sounds of a woman yelling. She was a stowaway, trying to get to the Costa Rican border. The crew had to drag her and her young son off the boat onto one of the islands, kicking & screaming the whole way.

Hi,
Yes, sleeping on the deck is rough.
Not to make light of how crappy a night spent on a hard deck can be, try sleeping on crates of empty coca cola and beer bottles on a three day boat ride. I went from Panama to Colombia that way, some years ago

Nice! I’ll be hopping cargo boats for that leg of my trip as well.
Maybe I’ll invest in some cardboard to use as a sleeping mat.
This is badass. I can’t wait to explore South America.

It’s always fun to look back on the experience after the fact.
Sometimes not pleasant in the moment though…
Wow, what an intense experience! I think I would have had a hard time seeing the woman and child get kicked off the boat.
It wasn’t easy.

I need to change it up a bit every now and then!
In which case, Matt, watch out for the ‘multa’ you may be liable for if you enter Colombia anywhere other than at an ‘approved’ entry port
