Faces of Guatemala: Flory

Flory

Meet Flory

First Name: Flory
Where Are You From: San Pedro la Laguna, Guatemala
Occupation: Spanish Teacher
Favorite Music: Richard Clayderman
Where Would You Like to Travel: Alaska in the United States, to see snow for the first time.

I’d like to introduce you to Flory, my Spanish teacher for 3 weeks at Escuela Cooperativa in San Pedro la Laguna, Guatemala.

Flory has been very patient with my horrible memory, and she’s an excellent language instructor. She has a husband, Jose, and a five year old daughter, Linda. As a teacher she earns about $70 US a month…

How cute and sad at the same time that she’s never seen snow before.

Please tell Flory hello for us and let her know that she doesn’t have to go all the way to Alaska to see snow. She’s really beautiful!

She seems a very caring person – and although I should know what income and costs are in some countries, a salary of $70 per month seems so little.

How does it compare with the wage of say a woman who works as a maid or cleaner in a small hotel, I wonder?

Not sure exactly, but 70% of Guatemalans live on around $2 US a day. Her husband makes a lot more, and if she lived in the city she could make $250 US a month. Teaching Gringos in a small town just doesn’t pay very well… :)
