Daily Travel Photo: Hand Feeding Giant Wild Tarpon

Feeding Tarpon in Key Largo

Watch Out for the Sea Monster!

At Robbie’s Restaurant in Key Largo Florida, if you go out back on the docks with a bucket of bait and stick your hand over the water, something like this will happen…

Giant 4-6 foot long Tarpon will leap out and snatch the bait from your hands. Or, in some cases, they’ll decide your hand itself is a bit more tasty.

Never having heard of a tarpon I decided to look them up on Wikipedia.

This sentence caught my eye: “Adults are strictly carnivorous and feed on mid-water prey; they swallow their food whole and hunt nocturnally.”

So yes, I can see how a hand might be attractive to them ;)

    Looking forward to the video.
